Prenatal Education Music
Jiang Libo
Before he was born, we bought a stack of prenatal education albums
for which my task was to open up a CD first thing each morning
and play it, over and over, its instruments in conversation
despite not knowing if he could understand anything
if those mysterious ciphertexts were imprinting their primal ventriloquism
I just remember that every so often from inside his mommy’s belly
he’d deliver a sudden kick, though whether in protest or excitement we couldn’t tell
as if to give that spinning disk a moment’s pause or hesitation
The other day in the car I slid a disk into the sound system
only for the music to start up with that familiar piano overture, I guess
he must have dug it out from some forgotten corner
this disk we’d forgotten about long ago, though when I told him
that by the time he was born he’d heard this song innumerable times
I couldn’t see his expression. He was sitting in the backseat
in the dark, just listening quietly, with no discernible surprise
So intent, so lost in the music, as if seized by some sort of magic
the difficult rotation caused by long
disuse, even the long stretches of blankness or silence
which seemed to finally return him to the womb, with its familiar waters
from whose darkness he must have heard that shimmering needle
that youthful oar, rowing free in the ripples of memory
a song of innocence and experience, those parts that have not yet been worn down

The Study of Nail Traces*
Jiang Libo
“How did you manage to bend every last nail?”
The one with the most right to speak may just be the silent portrait
hiding in the shadows in the corner appreciating himself
Nails aren’t always hammered straight into walls, often
nails are nailed in like gecko tails, even if geckos
never know their own tracks, only face the wall to
meditate on their misdeeds, a brilliant escape, neither the
butterfly’s revivification nor the beetle’s metamorphosis
The only secret to success is getting it right by accident. But we’re
always confusing hanging a painting with nailing a person
what blood flows out of a person will freeze into a cold, hard pigment
Executioners never bend nails, they always
get each nail precisely nailed into
the prisoner’s hands and feet, like nailing a rare treasure
No one knows the trace of the nail, nor has anything
on our bodies coagulated thus far, just as no one knows that everyone
is a nail, hammered in inch by inch into some innocent body
When you hang a painting on a museum wall
each nail comes equipped with its own sharpness and innocence
