In the forest of Chiapas, in thatched huts without walls, in hammocks barely rocking, they sleep.
There it is said:
If you dream of a donkey, there will be a strong wind.
If you dream of tacos, you will see an anteater.
If you dream of an anteater, people are coming.
If you dream of a termite, you will see a jaguar.
If you dream of a jaguar, people are coming.
If the jaguar bites you, they are not people.
If you dream you are waking, you’ll be frightened in the forest.
If you dream of a mirror, you will see white stones.
If you dream of your tongue, beware.
All birds mean fever; all fish mean pain in your stomach.
If you dream you’re worrying about the cost of things, you’ll not have to worry about the cost of things.
If you dream of a party, for a long time you’ll be bored.
A gourd is a jaguar’s head; the old canoe an alligator.
If you dream of a house, you will see a wild boar.
If you dream of a beard, you will see a wild boar.
If you dream of a broom, you will see a wild boar.
If you dream of a radio, you will see a wild boar.
If you dream of a poet, someone will cry.
A shotgun is the tooth of an animal.
Beans are maggots and maggots are beans.
If you dream you are writing, you’ll be bitten by a snake.
If you dream of a lake, it is nothing.
If you dream of a frog, it is nothing.
If you dream of a flower, it is nothing.
If you dream of heaven, it is nothing.
If you dream of leaves, it is nothing, but if the leaves are shaking in the wind, grasshoppers will eat the corn.
If you dream of fog, people are coming who are sad and ill.
If you dream you know something, you do not know it.
If you dream of a halo around the moon, the end of the world is coming.
That which is thin in a dream will be thick.
That which is certain in a dream won’t happen.
风
[1671]

Wind
[1671]

Seek for knowledge in the greater World!
Philosophers stammer at the wind.
It is one of the secret and hidden things.
It was born after the Creation. There was no wind in Eden.
Winds are vehement or mild, constant or mutable, general or precise.
Some are hot, some cold, some moistening and dissolving, some drying and astringent.
They gather the clouds and disperse them.
They are vagabond and voluble. They are a broom that sweeps the earth.
They drive forward with a mad kind of violence.
They are fresh and merry gales. Windy years are the most healthful.
They come from every region of the sky.
There are countries where it never rains, or seldom.
But there are no countries where the wind never blows, and often.
Winds are made, or engendered a thousand ways.
The Sun is the chief begetter of winds.
The wind follows shooting stars.
Wind comes from great bodies of water, and the ice floating in the sea.
It comes from the burning of forests and dry meadows.
The melting of snow brings the wind.
On the peaks of great mountains, there is no wind.
The rainbow is dissolved by the wind.
The woods murmur before we feel the wind.
There are winds underground, vaporous and mercurial.
You feel them in the mines.
They are sulfurous, sent out in an earthquake, flaming from fiery mountains.
Caves are the prisons of winds, from which they are sometimes set free.
On the rocky cliffs of Aber Barry, near Severn in Wales, if you lay your ear, you can hear the sounds of winds underground.
There are wells in Dalmatia into which, if you cast a stone, winds will rise, as if the stone had broken some covering.
The North wind blows in the day. It scatters the clouds.
It makes the sea look blacker.
When it blows, men are more lively, healthful, and greedy for food.
But beware the North wind when sowing seed.
It makes sheep grow lame and bleary-eyed. It weakens their coupling.
Facing the North wind, they produce ewes and no rams.
The South wind blows in the night. It is wandering and free, soft and mild.
It gathers and nourishes the clouds, bringing rain.
Waves swell higher. The sea looks bluer and more bright.
It is agreeable to plants and fruits, killing their cankers and rust.
But men grow slow and dull and lose their appetites.
Their breath turns rank. Diseases reign. Timber and stones sweat.
The East wind is sharp and dry, vehement and large.
It draws the clouds to it, and they grow stronger, like fire in the wind.
It provokes long rains.
It is thought to be mischievous, neither good for man nor beast, as the proverb says.
It brings worms and caterpillars, hurtful to fruit. It is bad for grain.
In an East wind visible things appear larger.
The West wind is moist and nourishing.
It is vehement, and bends the trees.
But it is friendly to herbs and flowers and all manner of vegetables.
It is said that the West wind blew in the Golden Age.
It is the companion of a perpetual spring.
In a West wind audible things are heard further.
Winds are the merchants of vapors, which they carry from country to country.
They travel on long journeys, and sometimes arrive weary.
Columbus on the coast of Portugal knew that the West wind was blowing from some land.
Winds are prepared in the heavens.
They come hours before the eclipse of the moon.
They come at the rising of Orion, or when the smaller stars are not seen.
When the clouds look red at sunrise, wind is coming.
When the sun looks red at sunset, wind is coming for many days.
Mariners fear the fifth day of the Moon, for its winds make the harmless sea hurtful.
When the sea is smooth and calm, yet makes a murmuring sound, wind is coming.
When the echo of the sea on the shore is heard more clearly, wind is coming.
When the sea swells silently and rises higher than ordinary in the harbor, when the tide comes in sooner than it should, wind is coming.
When the hearth fire looks pale and makes a murmuring sound, a storm is coming.
When the coals shine bright and spark, wind is coming.
Leaves and straw and feathers start swirling on the ground before the wind comes.
A heron flying high over a low cloud means wind.
A heron standing alone in the sand, sad and melancholy, means wind.
Geese cry out for rain.
When seagulls flock from the sea to the shore and stay upon the dry land, wind is coming.
When crows fly to the rivers and lakes, chattering and bathing, a storm is coming, but crows walking up and down mean wind with no rain.
An owl hoots that the weather will change.
Spiders work harder when the wind is coming, knowing they cannot spin their webs in the wind.
When the sea is calm the wind will come from the way the dolphins came.
Pigs are terrified by the wind.
