Suitcases
Lidija Dimkovska
The chest under my mom’s bed
brought from her village to the city
holds fish-shaped plates
wasting away forgotten for years
each one wrapped separately in a newspaper
wedding gift, social souvenir.
Their gills washed away; their sea turned grey
When we opened my mom’s chest
There is barely anything left.
The little suitcase under my uncle’s bed
That I unlock a hundred times a day
Holds all the wars in a temporal heap
from the history lecture notes.
Folded in two in two columns
Charging from the trenches
Towards the future nation-state,
A little political suitcase of oblivion.
The suitcase under the bed in the student hall
holds the “Ljubinka” typewriter
Used by my Mongolian roommates
To type their love letters in Cyrillic
Kept in vodka for nine days
In bottles with sheep’s intestines
Before sending them across three seas,
Umbilical cords to the motherland.
The suitcases in Auschwitz, behind glass cases
Away from the reach of the visitors
Taken away at the entrance
Under the “work sets you free” arch
Heavy under the weight of life
coiled inside, the weightlessness of death
The Holocaust is a passport for a world long gone
In the double bottom of existence.
Life drifts among people,
Leaving behind their suitcases.
In them, knowledge catches dust,
memory – mold, forgetfulness – stench.
Each suitcase is an open story,
Each story is a closed suitcase.
And you don’t have to leave to stay,
nor to stay while being long gone.

Marija Todorova、
History
Lidija Dimkovska
Dead people in living years,
Living people in dead years.
Dead peoples in living decades,
Living peoples in dead decades.
Dead humanities in living centuries,
Living humanities in dead centuries.
Each time has undesirable histories,
Each history - undesirable times.
Between the content, abstract and keywords
History is an essay about life and death.
After the end of the conference
it will be published in a volume
Which will never be read by anyone.
