16世纪英国诗人兼神学家约翰-唐恩(John Donne)的名诗，海明威曾相当喜爱，将之刊选在其小说“战地钟声”(For Whom the Bell Tolls) 的扉页。李敖也曾为此诗感动，并将之翻译成中文如下：

No man is an island

No man is an islan d, 

Entire of itself; 

every man is a piece of the continent, 

a part of the main.

If a clod be washed away by the sea, 

Europe is the less, 

as well as if a promontory were,
